Caricature of Life

WHO AM I?

My name is JJ, I'm a 26 year-old gentleman from a depressive little town on the west coast of Scotland by the name of Oban, which is famous for its rain and its whisky - two things which seem to medicate one another.

I need something better to fill this space on my Tumbleblog. Anyone with a suggestion should put it on a post-it note and email it to me =]

Isn’t it iRonic…?

I never really felt the urge to jump aboard the Apple bandwagon and get myself an iPod, for many reasons.  Firstly, I just don’t have the need to carry virtually every album I own everywhere I go.  I always found the 200+ song capacity of my regular MP3 player to be quite substantial, especially when I would find myself skipping through three songs to find one that I want to hear.  Secondly, why the small ‘i’ followed by a capital ‘P’?  That doesn’t make sense to me.  In fact, it frustrates me.  It isn’t fucking right and just emphasises Apple’s need to be cool, which is the main reason people buy an iPod anyway, isn’t it?  Big ‘I’, wee ‘p’.  Ipod.  Not fucking iPod.  It’s stupid.

Anyway, my girlfriend bought me an iPod for Christmas and yesterday I learned why a person cannot live without this little gadget.  Katie gave the me iPod with a few of her favourite albums pre-loaded, and after much consternation I was able to transfer all of the songs from my MP3 player and then begin the process of adding all of my albums.  I’m not even sure I’m a quarter of the way there yet.

So I was walking home from work yesterday afternoon and this sweet, beautiful song began to play.  I swooned and fell in love with it while trying to remember what it was.  And then I realised that it was “Mary Jane” from Alanis Morissette’s iconic Jagged Little Pill album.  It was the first time I’d heard the song in years and it was a pure joy.  I had to go home and listen to the album in all of its glory.

I don’t think that it is too crass in exaggeration to suggest that Jagged Little Pill is a brilliant album.  I personnally prefer Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, but there is something about Jagged Little Pill.  It is loaded with great rock songs.  Even “Ironic”, if you don’t take the ridiculous notion of 10,000 spoons too seriously, is a fine track.  “You Oughta Know” fizzes with anger, “Hand in my Pocket” is uplifting and positive, “Mary Jane” oozes beauty.

So I guess it turns out that the ability to have access to every album you own, no matter where you are, is useful after all.
